Constellations of the Zodiac: Pisces

If your birthday is between the Feb 19-March 20, your zodiac sign is the water sign Pisces, which represents not one fish, but two.

What is the story behind it?

In Greek mythology, the two gods of love, Aphrodite and Eros, were chilling on Mount Olympus, when suddenly Typhon appeared. He was a terrifying giant, with wings, and legs made of snakes. Needless to say, none of the gods particularly liked him much.

Most of the other gods were able to flee, by turning into other animals, however the two gods of love did not possess this power. Two fish appeared and allowed them to jump on their backs, fleeing into the river. Athena then turned the fish into constellations to live for eternity.

In alternate versions of the myth, Aphrodite and Eros themselves turned into fish!

Can I see Pisces?

The Pisces constellation looks like two fish swimming at right angles to each other, north and west, with their tails joined by a ribbon. It can be observed between October and December.

Top tip for observers: the constellation contains fairly dim stars, however can be observed in the northern hemisphere because it contains the point at which the Sun crosses the celestial equator at the vernal equinox.

Fun fact: although it’s not the brightest constellation, it’s the 14th largest in the night sky, occupying an impressive 889 square degrees!
